When you are faced with a serious legal issue, the first option for many people is to call a lawyer. If you want to hire a lawyer for full-service representation, you are typically going to be asked to pay a large deposit in the order of $2,500-$5,000 or more. But the reality of this situation is that may people just can’t afford to pay these fees. But with unbundled or flat rate, fixed legal fees, you know exactly what you are getting as well as exactly what the cost will be for that service.
In this way, your fees, and your divorce, will be predictable and straight-forward.
If you aren’t sure where to start, then the Free Membership is probably your best bet. Included with each membership is a free 15 minute call with a lawyer to discuss your personal situation, determine you are in the process and how complicated your case may (or may not) be, and start to outline what you are looking to achieve in your divorce. At that point, we can help you determine what an appropriate first action step is for you.
It depends. Every individual and case is unique. But the vast majority of individuals can do this, and do it effectively. But understand that you aren’t alone – by signing up with one of our premium membership services you will have the legal help you need, and we are just a phone call away. There are numerous aspects to the process of legally separating and getting a divorce in North Carolina, and we will help you through each of those stages with guided tutorials and blog posts contained within this site.
When you are ready to start preparing your separation agreement, we are here to help with our proprietary DIY Divorce Online Form Builder. And after you have drafted your separation documents, if you need legal assistance to review and update them we can provide that service at a greatly reduced legal rate.
We have a basic membership that is 100% free. However, if and when you are ready to upgrade to a premium service, you may do so at any time. You will pay for an initial month of access to this site, and then you will be charged each month on the anniversary of your sign-up date unless you cancel ahead of time.
You may cancel at anytime and you won’t be charged again. If you decide to hire us for unbundled services, such as to review documents or set up a meeting with a lawyer, you will be charged at the time you sign up for those services. After you sign up you will be redirected to an online intake form and/or our scheduling software to set an appointment date.
You can cancel or change your DIY Online Divorce membership at anytime by visiting your account page and choosing the “cancel” option. However, if you decided to cancel, you will lose any benefits associated with that membership at the end of your current monthly billing period. Unfortunately, we do not provide refunds for partially used months.
That is absolutely fine! We love helping people, and legal assistance is just a click away. We can assist with everything from document preparation and review to legal coaching to even appearing in court or at mediation on your behalf. All of these services are provided by an attorney at The Hart Law Firm in Cary, North Carolina.
After practicing family law for almost 15 years, the founder of DIY Online Divorce decided that the traditional law firm model just wasn’t working for many members of the general public. We decided that we wanted to offer affordable and accessible legal services to the people that were falling through the cracks.
And while most legal document sites do a marginal job of providing forms or general information about many areas of the law, we provide all of this information that is specific to family law in North Carolina. Our forms and legal documents are specific to North Carolina, and we have lawyers that have practiced here in North Carolina that are familiar with the local rules, customs and strategies that will work for your case.
Yes. Since we will work with clients from across the state of North Carolina, and sometimes even outside the state, many of our client meetings and coaching sessions are conducted either over the phone or via an online video conference service. All you need to do is pick the service you need, pay the requisite flat fees, and schedule a time to talk. It’s that easy.
Yes. DIY Online Divorce is designed for both contested and uncontested cases in North Carolina. Our proprietary form generator will give you easy access to the forms you will need to file to have your case heard in court, and our helpful online tutorials will help you to understand what it means to go to court and how you can maximize the chances that you will be successful.
In addition, this site contains a number of free and premium tools, articles, videos, and other resources that will help you to prepare your case, negotiate effectively with your spouse, and obtain the best possible outcome for your family without spending thousands of dollars in legal fees. And if you decide you need someone to look over what you have drafted, we can review your documents for you at greatly reduced rates.
However, if at anytime you become overwhelmed by the forms, the process, or even your spouse or his/her lawyer, you can hire a lawyer through DIY Online Divorce for reduced rates or even for full service representation.
If you are filing a case in court there will be additional filing fees that range from $150 to $225 currently. If you require the help of a sheriff or private process server to serve a lawsuit on your spouse, those fees will be paid separately. These fees are excluded from your monthly membership fees and you will be responsible for paying them on your own.
While we do not currently offer mediation services, this is something we are looking into and hope to have a solution in the very near future. So check back for updates!
Unfortunately, no. While both you and your spouse may sign up for a free membership, we only allow one spouse to sign up for a paid membership to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. This is why we ask for the name of your spouse when you sign up. You are certainly free to share the information you learn through this site with your spouse (and we encourage you to work collaboratively with your spouse to reach the best possible outcome for your case).
Feel free to submit your question via our online contact form and we will respond as quickly as possible. However, please note that while we cannot provide legal advice or strategy to non-paying clients, we are happy to discuss how we work and the legal services we provide to determine whether or not we can help you.
